Member Services

If you are enrolled in a workplace health insurance continuation plan, you will need to contact your COBRA administrator for information on how to apply, make payments and cancel the plan.

Your COBRA plan administrator is who you make your premium payments to.

Verifying COBRA Coverage

In the event of claim denials by an insurance carrier, members should contact their COBRA administrator to verify coverage has restarted and the plan is active.

Complaints

Oversight of the federal COBRA continuing coverage laws are the responsibility of various federal government bodies. Private-sector group health plans fall under the purview of the Departments of Labor and the Treasury, while the Department of Health and Human Services oversees the law that governs continuation coverage for state and local government health insurance.

Employer Non-Compliance

If you encounter compliance issues with your employer, we recommend reaching out to the Department of Labor at 1-866-444-3272 for assistance.

Their team can provide guidance and support in resolving any compliance-related concerns you may have.

Who Manages COBRA?

Many small businesses will manage COBRA continuation through their Human Resources Department. Larger companies may work with third-party COBRA Administrators that include ADP, Discovery Benefits and WageWorks.

What Is COBRA?

COBRA is the name of a federal law and not a company with benefits specialists. COBRA coverage allows individuals to continue paying for their most recent employer health plan should that plan stop for (almost) any reason. After premium payments have been made, the previous health plan will be restarted.

When To Call

If you have pre-existing health conditions or visit the doctor frequently, you should call your former employer and ask for their COBRA Administrator. You may be able to keep the health insurance benefits you had. Keep in mind that you will also pay the full cost of coverage, which is typically $400 – $700 per person per month.

If you are in good health, consider an alternative to COBRA health insurance to cover new illnesses and accidents only.
