Hy-Vee announced Wednesday morning in Des Moines Register advertisement that the West Des Moines-based grocery store chain plans to lay off 500 employees.

The company says in an unsigned, full-page advertorial — an advertisement that mimics the editorial format of a newspaper — that up to 500 office employees will be asked to relocate to retail stores across the company’s current eight-state portfolio. According to the company’s statement, 94 percent of HyVee’s employees work in retail.
