Can I Get COBRA And Not My Kids?

When I get my paper work in the mail, can I elect coverage for only myself and not my dependents?

Yes. When you get the election form in the mail, you may choose your beneficiary coverage.

Once the plan is back in effect, you may be able to remove dependents, but not add them unless the employer allows it or you have a qualifying event.

Qualifying Events Allow You To Change Your Health Insurance

You may add dependents to your COBRA plan by adding a spouse through marriage or having a newborn child.

These are considered qualifying events that allow you to make changes to your health insurance. This is also known as a special enrollment period, which is different than the federal open enrollment for new marketplace insurance.
