I Have A Pre-existing Condition And My COBRA Is Running Out, What Are My Options?

I presently have COBRA insurance. My husband passed away 13 months ago and my COBRA will be running out soon. I am having a terrible time trying to find insurance since I have diabetes. What can I do or why am I being told that NO ONE will insure me with diabetes.

If you have COBRA insurance because the death of your husband was the qualifying event, you are entitled for a period of up to 36 months to use the same health plan. Contact the US Department of Labor if this employer is not complying.

ACA Certified Health Insurance

Going on an employer’s COBRA plan is an ACA Certified health plan that will cover treatment and medication for pre-existing conditions, like diabetes. When your COBRA runs out, you will need to find another major medical plan that will cover your prescription drugs and doctor visits. The Affordable Care Act requires all employers with 50 or more workers to provide a qualified health insurance plan to their employees.

Anytime your health insurance stops, a special enrollment period opens up where you can search for marketplace insurance. The only exception is if you are delinquent paying your premiums.

Alternate COBRA Plans

An alternative for those in good health, would be a temporary medical plan that covers only new illness or unexpected injuries.
