ody Q: I am currently on COBRA because my hours were reduced. Shouldn’t my employment being terminated be a “new qualifying event”? /body
A: Typically, the limit for COBRA is 18 months from the date of the loss of coverage.
In some instances though, a second “qualifying event” occurring in the initial 18 months of COBRA can be cause for an extension of up to 18 months (a total of 36 months of COBRA from the original date of loss of coverage), but only for your spouse and dependents, if they are on the plan. To find out if that is an option, you should discuss it with your union’s COBRA Administrator.
