reinstatement of Cobra dental coverage after one non payment of premium

ody ody Q: Hi Cobra,

I am wondering if I may appeal the cancellation of my Cobra dental insurance. I have a medical reason, and could get a doctor’s note explaining it, though from my reading I’m now under the impression one is allowed to miss one payment. Can you give me any advice, including what documents I might need to appeal, if any, and where I should direct my inquiry?

A: COBRA is not an insurance company.

COBRA is a federal law that requires employers with 20 or more employees to offer the continuation of the same group health care coverage after you’ve voluntarily or involuntarily left your job, or have had your work hours reduced.

Because COBRA is simply the continuation of the same coverage you had through a previous employer, you would need to contact the COBRA Administrator for your previous employer to discuss questions you may have regarding your specific plan that you are on because of the COBRA law.

There is a 30-day grace period, but once you’ve missed that, there really is no way to re-instate COBRA without a qualifying event.

If your previous employer can not answer your questions or does not comply, you can call the Department of Labor at 1-866-487-2365.
