Q: have BCBS HMO tier & dental for myself & my husband. My company pays 80%. I will be leaving the company in a few weeks on disability. My husbands company offers medical but will only pay 50% of the employee. They will offer “family plan, not plus 1” but he pays the difference. I do not know what insurance it is. So, can I continue BCBS HMO tier just for me & drop my husband & dental? How can I compare cost to do this & compare to how much it would be to go with my husbands company?
A: Yes, you will have the option to drop your husband from the plan and drop dental when you elect COBRA. To compare costs, you will need to do some research. If you don’t want to ask your HR because you don’t want them to know you’re leaving, you may have to estimate, or look through paperwork or handouts you received during your company’s last Open Enrollment. If your current employer know about your departure, speak with HR about COBRA.
COBRA continuation is very expensive. There are alternatives to COBRA continuation available. Click href=”http://cobrainsurance.com/ here for a quote, or call us at 1-877-279-7959 (8am-5pm CST) and we can help you find an alternative plan.
