Q: I’m disabled & living on a LVAD. COBRA cancelled my insurance; I appealed and they still denied me coverage. Where do I go from here? I’m a diabetic; where I can get info or coverage?
A: COBRA is a law (not a separate insurance company) that requires employers with 20 or more employees to offer the continuation of the same group health care coverage after you’ve voluntarily or involuntarily left your job. COBRA did not cancel your insurance, because it is a law.
In order to qualify for the disability extension to COBRA continuation coverage, a qualified beneficiary must be found by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to be disabled within the meaning of Title II or XVI of the Social Security Act. The SSA must also find that you were disabled at some point during the first 60 days of COBRA continuation coverage.
