Q: I did not get a payment booklet as indicated by a representative I spoke to on the phone and my COBRA was cancelled. Can I make up the payments for I think October & November & December? Please advise where I can send the payment to and for what missing months.

A: COBRA is not an insurance company.

COBRA is a federal law that requires employers with 20 or more employees to offer the continuation of the same group health care coverage after you’ve voluntarily or involuntarily left your job, or have had your work hours reduced.

Because COBRA is simply the continuation of the same coverage you had through a previous employer, you would need to contact the COBRA Administrator at your previous employer to find out more about reinstating coverage. Typically, the COBRA Administrator is in the HR department.

Usually, if COBRA is cancelled due to non-payment, it cannot be reinstated, but you may still want to contact your COBRA Administrator to be sure.
