My girlfriend is appealing for SSI and can’t work. She has no insurance or income to afford her psychiatric medications, which are necessary for her appeal. What options do we have?
Yes, COBRA Covers Mental Health Conditions
COBRA continuation coverage includes the same benefits as the participant’s previous health plan provided by their employer. Since the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) requires that large group health plans (for employers with 50 or more employees) provide benefits for mental health and substance use disorders that are no more restrictive than the benefits for medical and surgical care, COBRA coverage would also include mental health benefits at the same level as the original health plan.

If she is within 60 days of losing employer health insurance, then she may still be eligible for COBRA.
