My girlfriend is currently in appeal for SSI and unable to work with no dependents, She was refused by Nebraska health and human services. her disability attorney tells her she needs to be on her medications to continue her appeal, but with no insurance or income she is unable to afford a visit to psychiatric doctor, much less the medications that she needs. Is there anything we can do?
Yes, COBRA covers mental health conditions if it was part of group health coverage previously. If she is within 60 days of leaving her job she may be eligible for COBRA if she had employer-sponsored health insurance while she was working. If so, COBRA continuation would cover mental health concerns, if that was part of health insurance previously.
Pre-Existing Conditions Are Covered By COBRA
The insurance you are on after electing COBRA is the same insurance you had previously through an employer-sponsored health plan. The benefits you had previously, will apply to you moving forward for the 18 or 36 months you are eligible for COBRA. This means your pre-existing conditions are covered while on COBRA continuation.
