A: When an employer ends a retiree’s health plan, it is a qualifying event in which you become eligible for COBRA continuation. If your wife was on your retiree health plan, then she is also eligible for COBRA, even if you are on Medicare now. However, she will only be able to be on COBRA for 18 months. In some cases, this time could be 36 months, but only if you became entitled to Medicare AFTER electing COBRA for you and your wife, or in cases of death, divorce, or disability.
