Arkansas Mini-COBRA Law

Arkansas’ COBRA insurance law requires certain employers to offer employees who lose their jobs the option to continue their group health insurance coverage under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) for a limited period of time. The law applies to employers with 20 or more employees and the employee must have been covered by the employer’s health plan at the time of job loss to be eligible for COBRA coverage.

The state has also implemented a mini-COBRA program (where the employer has 19 or fewer workers) that allows employees who have lost their group health coverage due to certain qualifying events, such as termination or reduction of hours, to continue their coverage for a period of 120 days. This program provides eligible individuals with the opportunity to maintain their existing health insurance, rather than losing it completely or having to find a new policy in the individual market.

The mini-COBRA program helps to bridge the gap for employees who are transitioning to a new job or a new insurance plan and provides peace of mind during what can often be a stressful and uncertain time.
