How COBRA Insurance Works In Louisiana

In Louisiana, eligible employees and their dependents may continue their employer-sponsored health insurance through federal COBRA if they lose coverage due to a qualifying event. This provides temporary access to the same group benefits by paying the full cost of the plan.

For those who do not qualify for federal COBRA, the state offers its own Mini-COBRA continuation option known as Louisiana Continuation Coverage. This state program extends similar protections to employees of smaller employers and provides a limited period of continued group health coverage.

Louisiana’s Mini-COBRA Law

Louisiana law provides a continuation of group health insurance coverage for employees who lose their job or experience a reduction in work hours and are not eligible for federal COBRA. This state-level continuation coverage is available for up to 12 months and allows individuals to maintain the same benefits they had under their employer’s group health plan.

To qualify, individuals must have been covered under the group policy at the time of the qualifying event and must elect continuation in writing. The full premium, including any administrative fees, must be paid in advance to maintain coverage. This law helps protect individuals employed by small businesses that are not subject to federal COBRA regulations.
