Q: I had kaiser through work and HR said my coverages ended 10/15. I got no severance package and no COBRA as of yet.
A: COBRA is a federal law that requires employers with 20 or more employees to offer the continuation of the same group health care coverage after you’ve voluntarily or involuntarily left your job, or have had your work hours reduced.
If your employer meets these guidlines, they are required to extend the offer of COBRA (Continuation of the exact plan you had while employed). They legally have up to 45 days to send the COBRA Election packet to you, and you have up to 60 days from the date of the loss of coverage (NOT the date you receive the packet) to elect it if you choose.
Remember, COBRA continuation is very expensive. You pay your contribution, plus you pay your employer’s contribution, PLUS up to a 2% Administrative fee.
